A Simple Guide to Self-Publishing- NEW REVISED 3nd Edition

Following is a peek between the cover of A Simple Guide to Self-Publishing

Introduction

Self-publishing has become one of the fastest growing segments in the publishing industry today. With a computer, desk top software (such as: Pagemaker, In-Design, Publisher or Quark-X-Press - simple layouts can be produced with Microsoft Word or WordPerfect) and a printer, anyone can publish a book based on a story, expertise or inspiration.

You may have heard success stories of people who self-published and sold tens of thousands of copies. That does happen. However, self-publishing is a risky business and warrants caution. The fact remains, that out of every ten books published, three earn a profit, four break even and the rest lose money. With those odds it is sensible to approach this venture wisely.

No one can predict the commercial success of a book. The only way to find out is to give your idea the best possible chance to succeed with the least risk. To write a book is an art; to self-publish is a business. This is often overlooked until you are stuck with a garage full of unsold books. Your financial risk can be offset significantly by determining if there is a market for your book. Share your manuscript with members of your target audience, and ask them for an honest assessment. Even consider submitting an excerpt from your manuscript to a magazine or newspaper to see what interest is generated. If you are still enthusiastic, print a small quantity and promote your book to see how it sells beyond your friends and family. If it sells, print more; if it doesn't, you are not out a fortune. This is called test marketing. Other advantages of testing the water before taking the plunge are making intelligent decisions based on facts, not emotions, keeping your day job until your book proves successful and learning the best ways to promote and sell your book as you find your way around the world of publishing. With the overwhelming nature of the information age, the purpose of this book is to be an easy to understand, step-by-step guide to the self-publishing process. Filled with checklists, references, worksheets and money saving ideas, this guide will help you steer clear of the potential hazards of publishing a book on your own. Whether you publish online, print hundreds or thousands of copies, and market them locally or nationally, this book can save you time and money.

The book is organized into five chapters: Getting Started, Printing, Announcing Your Book, Distribution and Creating a Demand (both conventionally and online). There are two indexes at the back of the book: Subject and Organizations. The revised third edition now includes two new ways to publish your book: online publishing and print-on-demand. Also added is an expanded Creating a Demand chapter which includes an updated internet section for promoting your book on the World Wide Web. Internet addresses have been added where available.

Reading this book is a beginning, not an ending. You are urged to add depth to the ideas on the following pages before you make your final decisions. Request information from the many organizations listed, as they provide other useful services beyond the pages of this book. Self-publishing is not a get-rich-quick scheme and requires hard work and perseverance. I now understand why so many people in this industry have courteously uttered these parting words, similar to those often heard in a gambling casino's token window: "Good Luck!"
